 Proddatur

Proddatur is a city located on the banks of river Penna, in the Kadapa District of the Indian State Andhra Pradesh. It is the mandal headquarters of the Proddatur Mandal with its official language as Telegu. The town has a total population of 162,816 as of 2011 census. The total population consists of 81,368 males and 81,448 females.

Proddatur Municipality

The city is governed by its own municipality which was formed in the year 1915. Later on, the municipality was upgraded to Special Grade Municipality in the year 1998. The city is among the 31 cities of the state to be part of water supplyand sewage services known as Atal Mission for Rejuvination and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). The city was ranked 327th in the country in the year 2009-10.

History of Proddatur

Proddatur is the second largest town in the Kadapa district. Legend has it that the town was named by Lord Rama while going to Sri Lanka. According to the legend it is said that, Lord Rama on his way back to his hometown after killing Ravana, asked his wife, Sita, to find a place to rest near the river of Penna on the onset of dusk.  Sunset in the local language, Telegu, translates to poddu.  Hence the name Poddutur or Proddatur. 

Another possibility of the origin of the name relates to sunflowers, which are quite common in that area.  As we knowsunflowers turn towards thesun during the day, in the local language of Telugu "Poddu  irugudu" means tuning the face around in day time, which morphed into "Proddatur.”

Economy of Proddatur

The city is well known for its gold and cotton business. In its pressing and ginning factories large quantities of raw cotton is prepared for the market. The major trading business is concerned with cotton, indigo and food grains, which resides chiefly in the hands of the Komati community. The prosperity of the city can be seen in their jewelers shops with which the city is abound with. The town has a very busy local bazaar for purchasing and selling its local produce.
